Watch Narcos and learn Spanish could sound like an overstatement.
On this post we will talk about the possibilitie of doing just that.
Learning Spanish or any foreign language could sometimes look like an insurmountable task.
There are so many things to learn at the beginning, and it could seem daunting.
However, I‘ve been hearing stories of people drastically improving their language skills by watching TV shows.
Which is why I started wondering if that could actually be possible.

I have recently met a British guy who claimed to have learned Spanish by dissecting every single word in the Narcos series and memorizing most of the lines! LOL 😂

“I speak such a good English cause of video games and films”
There’s loads of non-native English speakers saying exactly that, all the time.
I once met a Polish girl who spoke Spanish because she had watched tons of Mexican soap operas, or so she claimed.

But, is it really possible to learn just like that?
Research does show that language learning is the result of the willingness to communicate (motivation) plus exposure to the language amongst other variables.
Does that mean that we could learn French or Italian by just binge-watching anything in that language?
If it were that easy everyone would speak a second, third, or fourth language.
After all, Netflix’s surging number of users does suggest that people do a lot of watching.
The devil is in the details.
The truth is, all the people I mentioned before, turned out to have a basic knowledge of the language before they started passively accumulating so much vocabulary, idioms, sentence structures, and so on.
I’d like to stress the word basic. Some had a two-week introduction course while others had a summer course or a semester in school.
Which takes us to the next question, if this works why aren’t we all doing it?
Well, it isn’t that simple either.
It turns out we all have a different mix of cognitive styles, meaning we all learn in different ways.

Some of us are more visual learners and have to see how a word or sentence is written in order to remember it.
Other people have great auditive skills and they need to hear a word or sentence to remember it.
Others need to interact with people to actually remember meaning or a phrase.
To summarize, we could say that it is indeed possible for some people to drastically improve their language skills by binge-watching Narcos in your target language.
Nonetheless, remember that it depends on your previous knowledge of the language.
